Dear James,
It’s Take Action Tuesday! Today we need your help to tell Congress that the
proposed cuts to the Department of the Interior in President Trump’s FY18
budget proposal are unacceptable! When we first heard of impending spending
cuts in President Trump's soon-to-be-announced budget proposal three weeks ago,
we asked you to contact your lawmakers and let them know this was simply
unacceptable. Well last week, President Trump’s budget was released – and the
suggested cuts are even worse than we feared. The President’s FY18 Proposed
Budget recommends a 12 percent cut, or $1.5 billion, to the Department of the
Interior. If this cut were evenly applied to all Interior programs, it would
slash $58 million from the National Wildlife Refuge System budget. The Refuge
System’s budget is already down 20 percent from FY10 levels, and should
Congress pass the President’s suggested budget into law, they would be dealing
a crippling blow to the Refuge System. Refuges would close, access for hunters,
anglers, and birders would be lost, and volunteer programs would be terminated
as wildlife management efforts proceed at the bare minimum. To make matters
worse, the Refuge System could experience an additional 10 percent cut for the
remainder of FY17 (May through October) as a result of a supplemental request
to the President’s FY18 budget. While these budget cuts are alarming, it is
Congress, not the President that decides final federal spending levels. And
lawmakers in Congress work for you. You can join us in protecting America’s
wildlife and the lands they call home by sending your congressional leaders a
message urging them to ignore the President’s FY18 budget request and fund the
Refuge System at an appropriate amount. Take Action! Thank you
