If you're not sure what I mean: http://grathio.com/2011/08/meet-the-tacit-project-its-sonar-for-the-blind/ From that page: "This is a project I'm calling Tacit. No, I didn't bother making an awkward ackronym for it, it just seemed like an appropriate name that's a lot shorter (though less descriptive) than "Hand-Mounted Haptic Feedback Sonar Obstacle Avoidance Asstance Device". It measures the distance to things and translates that into pressure on the wrist. It's wrist mounted and senses objects from about 1 inch (2 cm) to 10 feet (3.5m). It has generally fast response time (fractions of a second) to quickly navigate complex environments." Anyway, the idea this guy has is to keep it relatively cheap, non-invasive, etc., and through another, local, mailing list I belong to which also focuses on software, electronics, hardware, etc., I have now found a guy who reckons he'd actually seen this thing being mentioned, but hadn't known about the wiring diagrams etc. that are available on the above site, and he's very keen to try it out, look into possibly assembling a version of it, depending on availability of the parts/components, etc., but he's now also asked what other additional features/aspects might be of interest to blind/VI users? That's why thought might as well post this here, and see what you guys think, since, he'd also, obviously, need to be able to let real parts of the target group try it out if it comes to fruit as such - and I know when I let some guys play around with my KSonar at the BlindSA AGM last year, some of you seemed quite keen on the idea of this type of thing, but, the main thing is this tacit unit should be a whole lot cheaper if it happens as such...<smile> Stay well Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...'
