Hi Carel,Firstly on the tredmill, what I do, and it probably takes practice, as I've done many kilometres on the road running next to somebody using a strap, which is simlar what I want to suggest on the tredmill.
If the tredmill has bars coming out next to you, instead of just something to hold onto infront of you, it makes life easier. I don't use a strap tied to the side bar on the tredmill, but lightly touch the side bar with my arm hanging in a easy position next to me, and then I sort of keep my pace with the tredmill and if I feel via the contact through my hand that I'm moving forward or backwards from my reference point, then I slightly adjust my running to increase or decrease. I hope this helps, as I do think it just comes with practice, so keep it at a walk.
If you haven't got anything to touch next to you, try and put an object that's solid next to the tredmill but close enough that you can run and reference touching it with your arm not in an auckward position.
As for my horse Billy, I think he can easily become a guide horse, especially at home. Out at endurance rides he gets so excited he pulls me all over, and when riding is a handful to keep from rushing ahead. He's good as a guide in the sense that he sticks to the paths thus as I usually ride ahead of my sighted guides, and they just warn me of low branches, splits in the route where Billy might take short cuts, or if for whatever reason he might take a track off the path. I also often follow other riders which makes it quite easy, although Billy prefers been infront of the group. at home I ride alone as I have a good mental map of our neighbourhood, or infact just the two large blocks plus a few other pavements around my immediate area, as although Billy follows the grassy pavements alongside the roads, I need to know at all times exactly where we are, so I can prevent him from maybe going into a vacant plot, or take a shortcut home. I thus in our area know of all the possible low branches, road signs, etc., and I must admit Billy doesn't just ram me into signs and stuff, but I still need to be aware of them.

Hi there, Horse riding?? The horse been trained like a guide dog??Noticed you mentioned fitness, any idea how I can keep on my treadmill when running and not fall off? The best I can do is a fast walk whilst holding on to one of the handle bars. There must be some gadgets out there to guide youstraight on the treadmill...... Jacob, any way of adding everyone's introductory mails to the website? I joined about three months ago, and missed all the stories/interests from other mailing list subscribers. It would be nice to know who is listening out there before I joined.
