Vision Restored in Blind Mice Groundbreaking and exciting work by Professor Robin Ali and Dr Rachael Pearson, partly funded by RP Fighting Blindness, has demonstrated that progenitor retinal cells can be transplanted successfully in mice. After four to six weeks, the transplanted cells appeared to be functioning almost as well as normal rod-photoreceptor cells and had formed the connections needed to transmit visual information to the brain. The full story, quotations and a video showing the results of the work are available at this link >> http://www.rpfightingblindness.org.uk/newsevent.php?tln=newsevents&newseventid=259 <http://rpfightingblindness.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bfa66697494e06264cf5b6738&id=207b90be89&e=39094945da> ________________________________ 2. Retinal Implants: Breaking News Clinical trials by the company Retina Implant AG in Oxford and London have progressed with the first two UK patients receiving their sub-retinal implant in April. The company report very good initial results with patients being able to immediately perceive light when the devices were switched on, and quickly able to identify shapes and objects on contrasting backgrounds. Full details and links can be found at http://www.rpfightingblindness.org.uk/newsevent.php?tln=newsevents&newseventid=261 <http://rpfightingblindness.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bfa66697494e06264cf5b6738&id=fd35c63acb&e=39094945da> ________________________________ 3. BOOKING ESSENTIAL: The RP Conference 2012: June 23, London The RP Conference is this year open to both members and non-members of the charity, HOWEVER PLACES must be reserved in advance. This full-day event takes place on Saturday 23rd June at the Novotel Hotel, St Pancras in London. We have some outstanding speakers confirmed, including Professors Robin Ali (see above) and Robert Maclaren, two very highly respected RP researchers, who will be discussion their work and the prospects for treatment. We have to confirm numbers in advance and demand is high this year because of recent research progress, so it is essential that you book your place if you wish to attend. For members, places are free of charge. For non-members, a donation of £30 is requested to help towards the venue and catering costs. The detailed programme and booking options can be found at this link: http://www.rpfightingblindness.org.uk/newsevent.php?tln=newsevents&newseventid=55 <http://rpfightingblindness.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bfa66697494e06264cf5b6738&id=be5c7a0f88&e=39094945da> We are grateful to Okuvision and Second Sight Inc for their kind sponsorship of this year's event which has enabled us to move to a much more suitable venue. ________________________________ 4. Research: The Priority Setting Partnership People facing sight loss have a unique opportunity to influence the direction of eye research in the UK through the Vision and Sight Loss Research Priority Setting Partnership (PSP). RP Fighting Blindness is encouraging all patients to take part by identifying their own "unanswered questions" about RP prevention, treatment and research and ensuring that the PSP is aware of them through its short survey. It is entirely possible that the identified priorities that emerge from the project will influence funders and researchers in the future, so it is really important to have your say at this early stage. To learn more and for a link to the survey please see this article on our website: http://www.rpfightingblindness.org.uk/newsevent.php?tln=newsevents&newseventid=260 <http://rpfightingblindness.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bfa66697494e06264cf5b6738&id=e4ebcbfc56&e=39094945da> ________________________________ 5.
