World Sight Week Ends with Success in Sierra Leone

World Sight Day was celebrated across the Bank's Network in the Diaspora and in
Sierra Leone, Standard Charted Bank marked this year's world Sight Day event
from the 8th 13th October 2007 to support its Seeing is Believing initiative
which is its unique community investment programme supporting the goals of
vision 2020 which aims At eliminating blindness in the world.
Globally the Bank has reached its fund raising target of restoring Sight to one
million people due to the efforts of staff, shareholders, flag sponsors, valued
customers and several others individuals.
The climax of the World Sight week activities was Sponsored Walk( Walk for
Sight). Hundreds of Sierra Leoneans including staff, Co-Sponsor, Children of
Milton Margai School for the Blind, Staff and other Banking Institutions
including First International Bank, Union Trust Bank, Sierra Leone Commercials
Bank, International Commercial Bank and Bank of Sierra Leone assembled at the
Standard Chartered Bank Headquarters to grace the occasion.
In his welcome address, the Acting CEO Mr. Idrissa A Kamara commended guest for
the large turnout which according to him, showed the interest of Sierra
Leoneans in supporting the fight against blindness. The sponsored Walk was
formally launched by Mr. Alfred Lahai. Senior Assistance Secretary Ministry of
Health, who deputized the Director General of Medical Services.
The sponsored walk which started at the Bank's Headquarter processed through
the main streets of Freetown to the Family Kingdom at the Lumley Beach.
Various speeches were made by stakeholders. In his speech, the Acting CEO
maintained that the Bank recognized the fight against blindness and had
committed itself to helping the poor. He thanked all the Co-Sponsors and
Partners who made the World Sight Week celebration a success. He especially
commended the Milton Margai School for the Blind for providing education for
the visually impaired in the country. He further stated that the Bank has plans
to provide more learning materials for the school.
Other speaker were Mr. Alhaji Sheku Koroma from the Eye Care Programme Western
Area Mrs. Emrica king of the Sight Savers International and Mr. Mustapher
Sonnie of Helen keller International .
The Head of the Client Relationship of Standard Chartered, Mr. Eyram Atsu,
thanked all participants of the walk and re-echoed the bank's strong commitment
to its corporate Social Responsibility.
In her closing remarks, the Head of Technology and Operations Mrs. Crimilda
Cole acknowledged the contributions of their co-sponsors CTC,VSO, Ibrahim Bazzy
and Sons, Sam King Services, Mackie Building Materials, Seaboard West Africa,
Rainbow Paints Ltd, Print Point Hughes Security International, Tajco Ltd, Benco
Trading Co, German Leprosy and Relief Association. Universal Building
Materials,Grafton Spring Water, Sierra Leone Brewery Ltd, Milla Group and BSB
International and called on them to continue their support in the fight against
blindness in Sierra Leone.
