Letter: THANKS: Community rallied to help blind man

By SHERRY OVESON

Post Falls

Thank you community for coming together with compassion and generosity toward
the misfortune of the individual who is blind and was recently robbed. I want
to thank those of you in the community who hire the blind and visually
impaired, not to mention those employers who hire people with a variety of
other disabilities.

For those of you who don't know it or haven't given it much consideration,
people with disabilities want to work and find the same sense of satisfaction
as I do, not only getting a paycheck each week, but from the experiences work
provides.

Over the past 20 years, since I have worked with the blind and visually
impaired, I can tell you that those who have set their sites high and worked
toward them are most successful. I have seen many who have graduated from
colleges and universities have moved on to wonderful exciting careers.

Computer technology is a tool that has increased the opportunity for blind or
visually impaired individuals to be successful in workplaces and careers such
as the EPA, call centers, accountants, teachers, and the list goes on.

However, technology is only a tool, and it has been and continues to be the
employers who are open and willing to look at an individual for his or her
qualifications for the position and thus hire that person because they are
qualified for the position.

Therefore, I want to thank employers for your time when we knock on your doors
and bring to you these people who have a desire to work. Some may need
adaptations for the workplace and some on-the-job training, but they all have
said, "I want to work."

We live in an area of growth and opportunity for all of us, which excites me as
it opens the doors to so many who want those same employment opportunities you
and I have. This being Disability Awareness Month compels me to look around and
see just how great Coeur d'Alene and the surrounding areas are with their
willingness to open their demands to all possibilities for all people.
