KOTA KINABALU, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Although Lucia Lumboi, 45, is blind, she has
never missed to access various local and national issues as well as
international issues.
This is because the mother of a five-year-old boy has Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) including computer equipped with tools at home
that enables her to surf online local, national and international news website
easily.
However, not all blinds are lucky or have similar opportunities like Lucia, who
is a public relations officer at the Sabah Port Authority (SPA) as it would
cost a lot to bring home such facilities.
But a joint initiative by the Sabah Society For the Blind (SHSB), the National
Council for the Blind, Malaysia (NCBM), and the Sabah State Library to provide
a Cyber Corner for the group however will be one of the long awaited solutions
to problems faced by the blinds in accessing information online.
In the joint efforts, NCBM provides the fund to buy computer facilities and
computer programmes while the State Library provides space at the library.
The Cyber Corner equipped with three PCs located at the State Library, was
launched today by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister cum State Minister of Community
Development and Consumer Affairs Datuk Yahya Hussin.
"Of course, this centre is very useful for the group of people like me. Its
very helpful in providing us with information on what happens around our
country and the world," Lucia said when met during the centre's launching
ceremony.
"I will regularly visit this centre. Maybe once in a week," she added.
Meanwhile, Yahya in his address said the establishment of such a corner was
timely because the special group like the blinds had similar rights as those
normal to access to information and at the same time to voice their views or
opinion.
