Blind Boys showing the way

By ed power

Shaking their heads and stamping their feet, the Blind Boys of Alabama are
giving it up for the Lord. Immaculately turned out in white linen suits, this
God fearing seven piece (and yes, four founding members are partially sighted)
perform gospel music with a fervour that makes even the most hackneyed church
standard feel like a thunderclap from heaven.

Led by a spry 74 -year- old named Clarence Fountain, the Blind Boys have been
plying their old-time revival sound for decades. And as they are keen to remind
us tonight, they've bagged four Grammy awards in all.

Cheered on by an adoring Vicar Street, they open with Presence of the Lord,
featuring Caleb Butler's sumptuous fretwork and Bishop Billy Bowers sweetly
eerie falsetto.

Blending gorgeous high notes and drowsy baritones, they proceed to transform
the honky Down Into The Hole into a swooning blues epic and re-imagine the old
blues number Deep River as a soulful acapella . On a cold and gloomy evening in
Dublin, it's enough to make true believers of us all.
