Yes, AVG is wonderful. I have the paid one because I wanted a little more
control. I didn't want it to scan my PC every morning at 8 A.M. so I was able
to turn that off. I did, however, want it to do automatic updates, which it
does when updates are available. They do a great job; the program just does its
thing, once it's installed, and doesn't interfere with anything else.

A firewall is also necessary to help you control intrusive software. You can
have control of what comes in and what gets sent out. I use Sygate but there
are others; before I retired, there was some discussion of Look and stop, which
I think is a firewall from England. My work place used a totally inaccessible
firewall; I don't remember what it was, but all the blind employees couldn't
stand the awful thing.
