Actually, I would agree with you intellectually, but I have spent the
last 20 minutes combining all kinds of MP3 files with the DOS commands
and none of them have had a problem.  I am sure there are some that
won't work, but I haven't figured out what the limitations are yet.  Any
clues?

You should never combine mp3 files by doing a binary copy. You might get

lucky and it may work for certain files but it is incorrect because each
mp3 
file has header information that comes before the data.
