You have to do it by the characters in order as any word crashes jaws with the wrong set of crash characters in. I hope not many medical terms would have such in.

You could modify the settings of th is list so that the offending word (or
variations) would be blocked from the list. You can even use regular
expressions. What do you think of that idea?
