Mary, that is true to an extent, but you can be sure your money is working for you to the max possible, too, and that can stretch things a bit. For example, if you have money in a local bank, transfer anything you don't need in a month to an online bank like ingdirect.com where even a plain old savings account gets 3.8%. Now, that's nothing compared to what we got in the late seventies, but it is better than any brick and morter bank can give.
