Is there any program that will not unencode the file to perform edits as you
will loose a little quality when it is re-encoded again.

Howdy, Kai.  Yep, I believe Larry is indeed right on this one.  I always see
the "building peaks" dialog every time I re-save a file in SoundForge.  I
was just unclear as to how the program is able to edit the files right there
on the go.  Larry provided the explanation.  This is indeed a fine list.
