I keep mine on hold all the time, and the battery lasts for months if you use it in the normal note taking mode. Now, start recording some hour long lectures and podcasts with it, and you'd better put a new battery in it after every few hours of recording.

Rick,
Thanks.
What is the best way to conserve battery life while traveling?
If you put the unit into hold, does this cause battery drain?

Is there any problem with taking the recorder through security at airports? If it goes through security, do you loose your recordings? Are they erased?
Thanks,

No the recordings stay put, but all settings get lost when
battery dies or
is pulled from unit.

Hi Rick,
Do you loose recordings when removing the battery? I would think
that you wouldn't but thought I'd ask.
