Of course, the better way to to do this would be to make the speech synthesizer on the PC have an independent volume from the rest of the system.

Jamie, you have hit on the reason that an external hardware speech synth is best for audio editing. You want to get the audio you are working on fairly loud so you can hear details, but if you do, your speech blasts your brains to jelly. An external speech synth solves this problem.
