It is smtp.gmail.com, but I don't know what the other settings are at

I disagree. I use the pop feature of gmail and all the messages that
I've downloaded are still on gmail, should I ever need to go there and
find something. This means I can still search and all that you mentioned
and still use the more accessible way of getting my mail via a pop
client like Outlook.

Yes, it can but using POP this way kinda defeats the purposes of having
a gmail account.  gmail offers all kinds of labeling and search
capabilities that triditional POP mail clients just can't do.
