Hello Chessers, Second Call for Fall-Winter Tournament Deadline for signing up for this tournament is Sunday September 26. So far, 12 players are in this tournament. Since we have around 30 members, I hope we can get at least eight more to sign up so we have at least five divisions of four players each. The following tournament overview should give you more details on how the tournament will work. Note some details may change. Finally, as usual, your comments are always welcome. Brief Tournament Overview: Start: The tournament will begin October 1. Time Control: The usual five days total reflection time using the 24 hour move rule. Schedule: One game per month with new games starting the first of each month. Organization: Players will be grouped into divisions of four players by their Elo ratings as of September 15. Divisions will be identified as Division A, Division B etc. Each player will play each opponent twice, once as White and once as Black for a total of six games. Concept: Three different openings will be used and you will play each twice once each color. Purpose: The purpose is to introduce you to new openings that you might not otherwise play in addition to playing for bragging rights for your division. Titles: Division winners will be awarded a suitable title such as Opening Wizard Division A. The opening moves being used: The King's Gambit: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 White gambles a pawn for a dominating center, better development, and a rapid attack on f7 using the KB file. The Queen's Gambit: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 An attempt to occupy the center with pawns and undermine black's outpost in the center. The Nimzovich-Larsen Attack 1. b3 Instantly fianchettos the queens bishop. Just add water. Notice that in each of these games Black actually makes the first move. Note also that both players can make any move they want after the specified moves as there are no further restrictions. The opening moves were selected to give exposure to an open game, a closed game and a flank opening game with only a few specified moves to give maximum flexibility.
