Surely we can have a volunteer copyright liaison between staff and volunteers.

Two of my books (Theurgy and the Soul, and The White Goddess) kicked back to step 1. I made explicit note in the comments field that the copyright is the University or whatever it is in each case.

Well, here's yet another merry-go-round.
Susan Mangis' submission of "on A Snowy Night" by Debbie Macomber has been
sent twice back to Step 1 for copyright verification.
As this is a Christmas book several folks have been waiting for, I went to
the copyright database to attempt to retrieve the info.
So, to this point, Susan spent time scanning and submitting the book;
Amber and someone else spent time duplicating each other's efforts in
validating;
and their thanks in return is a cryptic note embedded in the comments
seeking verification.
Oh yes, it's not in the copyright database
which means my recent submission (another collection) of Angels for
Christmas will likely be spinning wheels.

While Gerald in his note is attempting to be positive in how BookShare is
handling things, I'd argue that Gustavo has far too much to do given his
unable to effectively communicate such things as copyright verifications
(these shouldn't be hidden in Step 1 but directly communicated to
submitter and validator).

but back to the main issue: what is substantative enough for copyright
verification. Sure, finding the book in the copyright database is mind
soothing and comforting;
but, as said earlier, if one cannot rely on the book itself, something is
wrong.

One of the goals for BookShare for 2006 ought to be to work towards
sufficient staffing so there is better communications, processing, and all
the rest.
Marissa and Gustavo together struggled doing this, so why should be it
possible to do it on his own.
What happens when Gustavo, as an employee, gets fed up with things and
decides to hang his business hat somewhere else.
Where then is BookShare at that point without anyone else apparently
involved in the hands on nitty gritty of daily operations.

Yes, I understand the issues involved here -- legally protecting Benetech
and having necessary funding -- but at the same time there is the
important issue of serving customers and volunteers without the service
cannot exist.
