Well, yes and no. The document on tables is not final yet, but I don't think it will contain the detailed information I think you are looking for. Of course, once the documents I mentioned are in the manual, they aren't cast in stone. They can be altered based on questions or concerns which may arise in the volunteer community. You gotta start somewhere if you are going to get anywhere. Hope this helps. Question; when you mention the draft of "When to use Tables..I don't suppose you mean what to do with tables do you, or do you? i.e. how to put them in a file if tabs are wiped out? Should they be translated into words and sentences? (Volunteer action team). Lest you think we've been lounging, enjoying the luxurious salaries bookshare pays us, think again. Here's a summary of our activities for last week, just to keep you informed. This has been a busy group! ----- Well it's been another exciting week in the VAT! •Mayrie and I have a couple of documents that are almost ready to be placed in the volunteer's handbook. I have sent out the final draft of "when to use tables", and Mayrie has sent three documents for final checkout "proofreading with Kurzweil", "scanning using Kurzweil" and the "proofreading checklist". If no one finds anything earth shattering about these documents, they will be placed in the manual this Friday. "proofreading using Microsoft Word ® is still being worked on by Diana and Judy S. The volunteer's FAQ still has a lot of unanswered questions. We've agreed that much of the information in this FAQ exists in other places in the manual. But the information will be duplicated here to provide a general single place for volunteers to get answers to their questions. A document is being worked on "proofreading using openbook" by an outside volunteer. This document is in its earliest stages. • Pavi is working on a summary with Lara Long (Bookshare’s Product Manager) of what engineering is working on so that we will get an overview of their priorities and a big picture view of what Bookshare is moving forward on. We should get this report next week. • Starting this week I will send the VAT update to the volunteer user's list as well as the bookshare-discussion list so that the other bookshare users will be aware of what we are up to. • Pavi and I are continuing to work on getting the list of outsourced books currently being worked on the Bookshare Wiki so people wishing to scan a book can check it to see if the book is already in the works. She talked to both Jim Fruchterman and Betsy Beaumon about the criticalness of having a better search tool in place for people who are trying to determine whether to scan a particular book for the collection or not. This issue is definitely on Bookshare’s radar! • There really is a conference telephone call in our future somewhere. When it happens, we need to discuss how many people we want on the VAT, and what procedures we use to bring new members aboard. Bob
