Speaking for myself, I most often do have a copy of the book and welcome a
validator checking with me. If I'm missing something, or if the spellchecker
is, I want to know.

Hi, Carrie. Just to be clear and avoid confusion, you are referring to
fixing misspelled words that occur in the print copy of a book, right?
I'm making this distinction because validaters rarely have a print
copy of the book and yet we do run the spellchecker to catch words
that appear to be scannos. I want to make sure that new volunteers
understand that running the spellchecker to look for words that have
been scanned wrong is encouraged by Bookshare. It's just not ok to
change what the print book says, even if it's misspelled or isn't a
complete sentence. For those of us who are blind, I don't know how we
can tell if a word is misspelled in the print book itself since it may
look like a scanno to us. It's pretty clear when it's part of a
dialect, but typos in the book would be very hard for us to detect. So
this is a gray area for me. I understand you when you say that when an
error is part of the original print book, we should not change it.
That is true of wrong dates or the occasional reference to a wrong
character in a scene as well.
