[bksvol-discuss] Re: the story of a proofer

You made yourself clear in my opinion.
I think that you should be able to select your proofreader for the books
that you have scanned.
I also believe that many people vollunteer to proof books and then forget
about it.
Thus the books stay on the check out list with hold for so and so.
May be an email to those with holds in their name can be sent, or may be a
deadline should be placed on the holds.
For example, after 30 days the books should be released back into the
checkout list.
There are books on there from back in August, or farther than that with hold
on them.

Melissa Green

I did not mean to offend, and was certainly not speaking of you personally.
However, as a submitter, who takes the time to scan books carefully, it is
my belief that I should get to choose who proofs my books. If I want
someone
to proof something I've scanned, and they can't do it within two weeks,
I'd
rather it sit on the check out list and wait for them, rather than
allowing
it to go to someone not of my choosing.

It is not my belief that all proofers are bad. However, I, for one, have
had
very bad experiences with proofreaders from the general pool, and would
rather not go through that again.

I want certain people to proof my scans, and that's simply the way it is.

I take offense at this notion that only certain select people are
"reliable" proofers. I never get "hold fors", which is fine by me. It
doesn't mean I'm just some careless jiffy-proofer. I understand
submitters don't want the careless proofers, but I think there are a lot
more reliable folks out there than some people seem to think. It just
smells to me like in-crowd foolishness.

People can only have five books in their queue at any given time. So, if
someone didn't have room, the book might conceivably sit for longer than
two
weeks. Right now, that isn't a problem. The people I work with take books
of
mine in a timely fashion. However, once the new policy is implemented,
books
might be taken by unreliable proofers. If this is the case, I will be
reluctant to submit as often as I currently do.

Yes. You have proofread for me, and I'm very grateful for the work you
do.

Hi Shannon!

I really understand what you're saying about having a good relationship
with
a proofreader and how important that is. I've proofread your books--at
least
two or three of them, and I think we've worked well together.

However, I'm not understanding comments on this thread that express a
concern about the "holds" being for two weeks effecting the number of
books
you or others would be able to submit. The change in the "holds" just
means
you'd have two weeks to download the book from the time it was placed on
the
check out list. It doesn't mean that you couldn't renew it--I renew a
book
all the time.

Could you please clarify how this would be a negative?

Blessings.

Lynnsky
