Actually, it seems to me that the only differences between placing a hold on a book and downloading it and holding it in one's downloads are negative ones. If you have it checked out it is off limits to other proofers. If there is a hold on it then it is off limits to other proofers. The holds, though, clutter up the checkout list and if one is browsing it for something to proofread then one must sort past those. If there was a way to filter holds from non holds then one could just look at what is available and, as a matter of fact, there is a way to filter them. That is by checking them out. Then they are vanished from the checkout list as long as they are checked out. However, there is a five book limit on checking out a book. I understand why that limit was imposed, but as long as holds were then permitted it apparently did not remedy the situation. Hi all,

Lynne, I believe that Shannon is concerned because one can only download five books for proofing at one time. This is why the holds were instituted. By placing a hold on a book, it is there to be proofed, but is waiting for the specific proofer to do so. By shortening the period to two weeks, a proofer must reduce the size of his/her queue before being able to download any more holds. The submitter will have to slow down, or cut back on the books scanned for a given proofer so that he or she can keep up.

Yes, one is able to renew books, but if one has only five books, and a given submitter is working on a series, those books can't be submitted until the proofer's queue is reduced or eliminated. The holds act as a store room for active proofers who need to work with specific submitters.
