I use SBC dsl, but am not using the SBC email address, I am using gmail. I
can send messages to myself as well.

Do you by any chance use SBC DSL? My husband has had trouble sending out mail from his university mail program. Finally he called SBC DSL and it seems they put in some kind of spam guard. In order to send from his UCLA mail he has to elect to opt out of the spam guard. He's been able to receive mail o.k. but not send.
