Query: is this discussion of "soluble" page numbers only about Braille or about other formats? In Kurzweil, with some books I try to match the text page # with the program page number as they can be changed but that leaves a difference between the page number and the page number as in the # of pages so I get page 79 on the page and listed by the program as page 79 but it is page 97 of 97 pages because there are 18 "preliminary pages including blank pages. I set the page number to match the book pagination but that does not include the roman numeral pages or blanks between title pages which is why there is a big difference in books with introductory material. One only need to know the difference if you want to navigate to a specific page and then you need to subtract the prelim. pages from the program page number to get the text number but after seeking a few times it is easy to remember how to do it. This only works if you include the headings or footings that have the text page number since that is the number that the program or screen reader reads. If I have been long winded in the explanation it is because it is easy to get confused when dealing with different ways to count pages regardless of the final designation of rtf or kes or whatever.

I'm afraid it's not as simple as that because the book that caused me to write the E-mail was done in the office and I'm sure they don't use Kurzweil or Open Book so I can't figure out why this should be happening. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Adams" <ladams@xxxxxxxxx>

Hi, Jill. This may have resulted from someone trying to save a book in RTF little by little instead of scanning the whole book in Kurzweil or OpenBook and then converting the file to RTF. I did that once, and I'm sure I caused the validators endless grief. There may be other causes, but I know from experience that saving originally in RTF is trouble!

Does anyone know why in many books we are seeing two sets of numbers? I just downloaded A Thousand Splendid Suns and there is double page numbering with different numbers of course. Since this is far from the first book where I have seen this, I would like to know what causes it and how it can be eliminated. This particular book was scanned in office as a New York Times bestseller.
