Yes and no (don't you like how decisive I am? smile)

I tried a number of different fonts and sizes. In
courier , and my scanner scans or converts in that and
I think many of the files I've validated were in that,
the lower case y and g are similar only in that both
hav a tail and at the top are larger facing left.
lower case g as a small circle and lower case y nas a
small ve, both to the left side of the line that goes
down to make the tail. But in other fonts the
differences are greater, and in several the g doesn't
have a tail but has another circles at the bottom
going in the other direction. I can see where that g
could be confused with the number 8.

Possibly the book used a small font with the g with
the tail, and maybe the difference between the
lettering and the page background wasn't great enough.
Some older books yellow and then, I think, it's harder
for a scanner to differentiate between letters. I see
a lot of y being scanned as v when I validate.
Sometimes I have to look very closely or use the zoom
to be able to tell whether or not that's the case.
