Dear Grand CindyYou are such a hoot sidetracking us on this somber topic by wondering if we can hear the difference between s - c - a - n - n - e - r and s - c - a - n - n - o - r.
Jaws pronounced all of the words below the same. scanner scannor scannore that's scann ending with e - r, then o - r, and o - r - e,By writing scann or, that is s - c - a - n - n with a space and then o - r, we can hear scannor with the o - r ending.
There is a way of going into JAWS' brain and instructing it to pronounce the scannor with the o - r ending differently, but I doubt I'll take the trouble, and if I space between scan and or so JAWS users will hear the o difference in scannor, scann or, everyone will think I'm not heeding my spell checker. hahahehehahah
See why the little side trip you took, inspired by ann's message was a bit of welcome distraction? Her spelling differentiation is a good idea. We JAWS users will just need to tax our minds and infer the spelling from context.
To satisfy your ever questing curiosity, here's another tidbit about JAWS pronunciation. My screenreader pronounces somber, s - o - m - b - e - r, like sommer, s - o - m - m - e - r. He chucks out the b, lumping somber in there with womb and doubt.

Ann, I think that's an excellent idea. It has totally bothered me when I write scanner meaning the person and I keep thinking machine. Henceforth I'll use or for the person and er for the machine--BUT-- Will people who listen hear any difference? I suppose there is a difference in Braille--or isn't there? Grandma Cindy --- Ann Parsons <akp@xxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Hi all, Dunnow why there's such a hoodoo. This is a problem easily solved. If Carrie buys the books, which is part of Bookshare's contract with us as a provider of books, then why doesn't she put out a call for help when scanning a best seller is not within her comfort level? She could mail the purchased book to whomever volunteered to scan it. It would be a priority call on the volunteer list, sort of like an emergency 911 or something. She shouldn't be forced to scan and read something that makes her feel uncomfortable. At the same time, Bookshare has made a commitment to scan all the best sellers. Therefore, an emergency or high priority request to the volunteer list would solve this issue handily. In addition, with the new funding now available, it should be possible to pay scanners. Once a scanner, hmmm, or is that scannor, is paid, then he or she cannot demur when asked to scan books which make him/her uncomfortable. Or, at least the issue is not as important. If a scannor is paid, then perhaps there could be two employed so that what one won't or can't scan the other can? Ann P. P.S., I'm spelling the person who scans with an o r instead of an e r to distinguish the machine from its user. I have no idea if this is correct, but it makes sense to me. Yeh, I know I'm cracked.
