Sorry, this was meant for Allison. I didn't realize I was posting it to
the list, although why not? I'm looking forward to having two friends be
part of my crazed validating!

Not only did I like your comments, Allison, but I'm making a sort of
home-made validating style manual for myself, and for my couple of
friends whom I'm roping into this Bookshare validating "thing" to spare
them the steep and perilous learning curve I experienced. It's easy when
you say, step by step -- as you said:
Step 1. Replace all em dashes to two hyphens without spaces
Step 2. Replace all bullets with stars
Step 3. Replace ^m with ^m^p^m
Etcetera, etcetera, including the space, page number, space, chapter
heading, space, text.
All of that stuff that has been discussed and discussed over the months
I've been validating books. I'm just going to put it all down for me and
my two sighted friends who will soon be signing up to be validators too.

Hi,

I recommend treating the Roman numerals the same as regular page
numbers.
One can separate them with a blank line above and below if you like, but

rewriting them in any way isn't needed.

Glad you liked my validating tips. <smile>.

I'm just starting to validate a new book and I'm working on the preface,
which has Roman numerals. So in light of the recent discussion about
page numbers, can someone tell me how the stripper and how your text
readers (I'm a sighted volunteer) deal with roman numerals. Do I need to
make sure that they are all lower case, e.g. xii or all upper case, e.g.
XII?

And will the stripper realize that they are numbers and leave them alone
if they are at the top of the page?

Thanks, and thank you Allison for your neat to-do list.
