I want something technical or business oriented -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Scott Rains Sent: Saturday, August 07, 2010 1:55 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: our commitment to you: from Jim Fruchterman and Betsy Beaumon Marilyn, Mayrie is right. We are making the new opportunities explicit in order to address peoples' concern about the new books coming in and he fact that they are moving older copies out of the collection. What you love doing is still very necessary. Being able to read the books you work on is enjoyable in itself. The other options have their own appeal depending on a volunteer's skills and personality. Our job as staff is to communicate changes and make sure you understand how these will impact the ways you contribute to Bookshare's mission. That could certainly mean that you would want to try something new but you will notice that at the same time we are working hard to improve the Online Manual. That is because we are committed to making it easier for volunteers to continue doing, and training others to do, what we have always enjoyed doing. There's plenty of work for everybody! The new options for volunteers are geared, I think, to those whose scanning and proofreading preferences are completely swallowed up by publisher quality books. Or, for folks who are afraid their work will be replaced by publisher quality books and don't like that idea. I, like you, enjoy what I scan and proofread. And though I'll be happy to help out wherever it's necessary, those things are still what I started volunteering doing, and have always enjoyed, and will continue to do. We just need to either be prepared to have the books be replaced that we scan and/or proofread before publishers who intend to offer books to Bookshare replace them, or seek out books that interest us but that won't be replaced, either because they're older books, or books produced by publishers who don't contribute to Bookshare. There's a place here foreveryone. And all contributions are good contributions. I don't think you need to worry. Not finding anything resembling my own reaction so far, I have to ask: What about any scanners and/or any proofreaders who are, as I am, quite thrilled doing precisely what they're doing now? I'm a new scanner and I scan books that appeal to me. I'm a proofreader for under two years and love proofreading scary murder mysteries and true crime stories. I didn't notice anything in the new needed options that appealed to me. Do I have to learn a new skill now?
