[bksvol-discuss] Re: ot is a courtesy rather than thumbing one's nose at moderator or other list members

Should we put ot on this line of messages?

I agree with Evan and bookshare that a little ot is ok. Oh, but not a whole bunch.. Sometimes ots go on and on and on and on and on... and I don't usually have the will power to skip them--I might miss something. Plus, I remember some ot messages that were just downright fun: such as your favorite narrator, typewriters and keyboards, the history of words, etc. etc.

Hi Ann,

The answer to why, if people know something is OT, they keep posting it here--in Bookshare's case anyway, is that Bookshare has stated on more than one occasion when the subject of off topic messages has come up, that they feel that a certain, moderate, amount of off topic discussion is okay because it helps to foster a greater sense of community among the volunteers. I agree with that idea, by the way. There's been a time or two I recall, when things really got out of hand in the OT department. But most of the time, the list seems to work pretty well with a bit of tolerance for OT messages..

Evan

Hi all,

Interesting take on the matter. Hadn't thought of it that way, but perhaps you're right. I guess what I object to is people who continue an off-topic message for twenty messages or more and they keep putting OT on them. <smiling> I always want to say, "If you know it's OT, then why are you posting it here?"

I will keep your take on this in mind, though, E. Thanks for the different slant.
