Should we put ot on this line of messages?I agree with Evan and bookshare that a little ot is ok. Oh, but not a whole bunch.. Sometimes ots go on and on and on and on and on... and I don't usually have the will power to skip them--I might miss something. Plus, I remember some ot messages that were just downright fun: such as your favorite narrator, typewriters and keyboards, the history of words, etc. etc.

Hi Ann,The answer to why, if people know something is OT, they keep posting it here--in Bookshare's case anyway, is that Bookshare has stated on more than one occasion when the subject of off topic messages has come up, that they feel that a certain, moderate, amount of off topic discussion is okay because it helps to foster a greater sense of community among the volunteers. I agree with that idea, by the way. There's been a time or two I recall, when things really got out of hand in the OT department. But most of the time, the list seems to work pretty well with a bit of tolerance for OT messages..Evan----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Parsons" <akp@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, July 16, 2009 7:29 PMSubject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: ot is a courtesy rather than thumbing one's nose at moderator or other list membersHi all,Interesting take on the matter. Hadn't thought of it that way, but perhaps you're right. I guess what I object to is people who continue an off-topic message for twenty messages or more and they keep putting OT on them. <smiling> I always want to say, "If you know it's OT, then why are you posting it here?"I will keep your take on this in mind, though, E.
