Hello Bookshare subscribers and volunteers ,
Some of our subscribers prefer to read our books with a screen reader in
their favorite web browser. They do this by opening the XML file that is
included with our DAISY books, periodicals, and newspapers.
Unfortunately, a few subscribers have reported problems opening XML
files. The following paragraphs explain how to fix the two most common
errors.

The majority of cases receive an error message similar to the one below:

***** begin error message

The XML page cannot be displayed.

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error
and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

Access is denied. Error processing resource 'dtbook-2005-2.dtd'. Error
processing resource.

***** end error message

The above error message occurs when the subscriber tries to open the
.XML file without first extracting the files from the book archive. When
you open a book archive, you are placed in a list of available files.
However, these files have not been extracted and are not ready to be
accessed. These instructions assume that the built-in Windows unzip
utility is being used. If you have a different unzip utility, consult
its user guide. To extract them, using the built-in Windows unzip
utility, do the following:

* locate the book archive on your hard drive and press enter or double
click to open it

 * to move to the Extraction Wizard File Menu, press Alt

* to select the Extract All option, press down-arrow, then Enter

* to continue, press enter

This will open the "select a folder to extract files to" dialog.

* to save the book in a sub folder in the current location, press enter
to continue

If you wish to save the folder in a different location, press the Browse
button

* Enter your password when prompted

* Press enter again to finish.

This will place you in the newly created folder with all the files
associated with the book. Now, when you press enter or double click it,
the XML file should open properly.

Other subscribers report that opening the XML file starts the wrong
application. Typically MS Word or other XML editor. To resolve the issue
Once you have successfully extracted the book archive, do the following:

* Select or highlight the XML file

* Press the Applications key or Shift+F10 to open the context menu, (a
right mouse click also works)

* Choose the "Open With" option

* Instead of choosing a program from the list presented, down arrow to
the "Choose Program" option and press enter

* from there, Use the up and down arrow keys to locate your favorite web
browser

* tab to "always use this program" and press spacebar to place a
checkmark there

* tab to the Okay button and press spacebar or enter

This will save the file association between XML and your favorite web
browser. The above instructions assume that Windows XP is being used.
