They were Choose Your Own Adventure or Pick A Path, are the series I know of 
that do what you were asking.  Smile.

Does your son like the Encyclopedia Brown series? I
see we only have two of them in the collection. As I
recall from many years ago when my kids were they were
very popular. And what do you happen to know what the
books are that have different endings to the mysteries
or stories on different pages? The reader had a choice
as to how he/she could continue or end the story. That
series was popular, too, but I can't remember the
titles.
