Elizabeth,
You'll have to define what you mean by member. The system will ask you for
login information, but you don't, to my knowledge, need a paid subscription.
And, I don't see what the difficulty in going to the website is to do this
task. Kurzweil is not focused on providing features for BookShare
volunteers, as much as I wish they were, it's a separate product developed
for scanning and reading.

I assume it searches for those books whether or not you are a member.

Elizabeth,
Interesting, well I'm really still scratching my head as to why those
people would think that, but there's not a whole lot I can do.
To my knowledge BookShare has contacts at both Freedom Scientific and
Kurzweil. Stephen Baum even showed up to the NFB user group meeting for at
least part of it. Gustavo has said on the list that he tries to meet with
Stephen when they attend the same conferences.
And it is of course, possible to search the BookShare database (live
collection only) from inside Kurzweil. It's under the Online menu, titled,
search for books.
OpenBook has a similar feature, but I can't say if the feature is a
working one.

Seemed odd to me but I have heard it now from several blind folks. Some
of them work for agencies and software manufacturers too so the feeling
must be widespread. The part about haveing to be a member to search
worries me almost as much as the part about having to be a member to
submit. I am also concerned that k1000 and bookshare do not work closely
together. For instnace, it would be nice to somehow be able to input a
title before scanning it and search quickly for it in the bookshare
database even if you are not a member. that way, someone new to scanning
can make sure the bookshare collection does not include the book before
beginning the process of scanning.
How closely does bookshare work with the makers of scanning packages,
particularly those made for disabled users?
