Hey Katie and list, Katie, I hope you didn't misconstrue my comments as being negative towards you or anyone else for that matter. It's just one of those odd things where nobody made the suggestion, and someone else said we should reverse the list so that we see older books first, but it really isn't hard for us to just zip to the bottom and get at those older books ourselves, with no extra effort from Bookshare. Just the ramblings of someone who pretty much only validates his own books, grin. And even less of that lately, as I've found a few folks who enjoy validating the books I scan. The one thing that would absolutely drive me nuts is if I put my book up there and it stuck around on step one forever. That's why I'm still floored by the number of people who just throw the books up there and don't make any effort to validate. Perhaps I'm just too geared towards being a perfectionist. I think it is our nature to start from the top and move down. I have browsed form the bottom to the top. I have a number of books right now from Monica to scan but I will do my part to get some validating doneJ Katie Hill Miracles happen not in opposition to Nature, but in opposition to what we know of Nature. -St. Augustine ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Scott Blanks Sent: Friday, June 30, 2006 8:23 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: just submitted Since this thread began a day or so back, I've been astounded by the fact that nobody has put forth the incredible idea of ... browsing the books from the bottom of the page up. If the older books are in fact at the bottom of the list, and there are some who would like to get those languishing submissions into the collection, then why not simply move to the bottom of the page, and start working your way up. Am I missing a fundamental concept or reason why this method would not work? If the current problem is that people only browse through the first few dozen books, or even as many as a hundred titles, then working from the opposite end of the list would seemingly begin to solve the current issue of books stagnating on step one. Both excellentJ I agree with what you are saying Jake. IF we could get the list down to 200 to 250 it would make browsing and selecting books to validate easier. Now the newest books or the books that are put back on step one are at the top. The first 100 get browsed and selected while those at the bottom of the list linger. But the nice thing is we keep growing the collection and the admin queue is well under 100 these daysJ I read/validated a book called the Little Ice Age a while back and this morning on the bus had a wonderful discussion with a former storm chaser and meteorologist. Yikes, we want to shrink it though. *grin* It might be best to hold off on the bulk scanning until we can get this list down to a better, more manageable number like 250, rather than the 430 it is now. That would have the added benefit of us working on older books that have been around for a while, and, if that is done, then the turn around time for books overall should improve. Thoughts? Other ideas? Jake PS.
