Hi Lynsky and everyone!

When I download a book to proof, I don't touch that download, but just load it into Word and immediately save it as the title of the book without my name and the number 1 after the book title just before .rtf. At the beginning of each sitting to continue proofing, I load the file with the number 1, save as with the number 2 and work and so on until the book is all proofed. I also have a folder on each of my hard drives with the identicle files so that if one hard drive goes down, I will not have lost any work.

I'm glad I have a pristine checked out download, because I found that the book I'm proofing now has the sentences all run together so that the end punctuation of one sentence is bumped up against the beginning of the next sentence, no matter if there are quotation marks in the sentences or not, and even the chapter titles and the first sentence of each chapter are bumped up together on the same line. I have never seen this before. I'm just curious, what could cause there to not be spaces between ends and beginnings of sentences?

Anyway, why I'm glad I had a pristine download to fall back on, I did a replace all on ." (that is a period and an end quote) in case your screen reader ignored that, and that caused the quotation mark to be at the beginning of the next sentence as an open quote where no quote should have been. I started fixing them manually and then thought, 'This is crazy, let Word do the work', so I started over, and now I'm doing replace all where it makes sense, and got a good system going, so I'm finally on a roll.

Hi Bud!

About a year ago I scanned an entire book and saved it. Word had a problem
and I ended up losing the entire book. Now, I back up all my books, whether
scanning or proofreading, to a flash drive. It's saved me more than once. I
also copy the original RTF file I download from Bookshare before I even open
it. That way I always have a backup copy in case I accidently replace or
remove something I shouldn't.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you, but I guess some things just work out
that way.

Blessings.

Lynnsky

You're right, but I scan 50 pages at a time and then go back over them and
delete headers and fix page numbers etc. I never have felt I needed to save
a backup copy, but now I can see the reason for it. I've never done this
before because I've never had a book that the title was the name of a place
that was repeated many times throughout the text. I've learned my lesson
now. Thanks for the feedback. I am starting to scan it again and I will
take precautions this time.
