You should be able to open the rtf file and then save it in the K format, no? 
Then you wouldn't have to rescan.

Yes, I use K1000, so it does it 
automatically.
 
I might have figured out what I did wrong...I saved 
it in RTF and then after I finished scanning the whole book, I didn't have a 
copy saved in K1000 format (can't remember the exact wording).

          What kind of  computer do you have? Maybe you 
            can do a Find for the title and you'll find where on you computer 
            (or on a backup disk if you saved to that) the file is.
