She is an instructor, too, so she should definitely know better. They're usually not very good, (the polite version) she will not permit herself to be contacted, & the whole thing ends up taking a lot more time & agravation than it's worth. & I am a christian-fiction-aholic. But absolutely no book I validate will go into the bookshare collection as crap. & if circumstances like those above prevent me from putting in a book that's less than excellent, I'm just not gonna do it at all. 1 reason why some folks I know won't join Bookshare is because they feel the quality of materials is inferior, & that has been true in the past. There's a different breed of scanners & validators out here now, but some still cling to what was acceptable in the past. Those folks somehow need to be told, in no uncertain terms, that it's a brand new day. & either failing to validate their scans &/or rjecting them when that's indeed what needs to happen might be the best way to get that message across with great clarity. I think 1 way to do that from the very get-go is w/a tool similar to that which is used to run books thru when they're uploaded for acceptance. It should place particular emphasis on slashes, carets, etc. & if there's a given percentage of those stray characters, or if the submission is rated as fair, just have the submission rejected right then & there. Maybe then folks'll start gettin' the idea it isn't worth flooding the step 1 page w/crappy submissions. Till something like that starts to happen, these folks will continue to submit garbage &, by virtue of the sheer volume of material & patient validators like Laura, still pay for their membership. If the submitter is able to convince an administrator/staff member there's a valid reason that the tool's rating should be ignored, then the administrator can upload it & bypass the tool. I cannot imagine that'd happen real often, though. Bookshare has grown from a home-grown, grass-roots nonprofit to a multi-million dollar organization. & for that reason, if no other, it can't be accepting garbage-can submissions.
