Robert, just curious, did you exercise the binding a bit., make it more
flexible.  You do this by pretending to  read the book and then smoosh the
binding back as you turn the pages making the glue nice and flexible in the
process.  I have found especially with larger paperbacks exercising the
binding works much better if you open it to the middle and then, well step
on the spine to break up the glue and make it more flexible.  Obviously not
recommended for hard covers, but it does make things more easy to lay on the
glass.
