Hi Mickey,
While you make a good point, I imagine you are one of our more prolific validators. If you truly have trouble fixing the book, then it's probably not worth the time.

If it requires an hour to edit say, 20-25 pages and this book is a regular style book, then a rescan in all likelihood would be 3 to 5 times as productive. It's not worth wasting time when in the mean time, two or three books could be worked on and processed.

We need to get Step 1 down to something more reasonable than 400+ books. I know lots of us out there are trying. Perhaps, Carrie should suspend using the bulk scanner as much until we have only, say, 250 books on the list. Hopefully that will help speed books through the system.

I usually try hard to fix bad scans, thinking that the book will be of worth to someone. I'm from the 40s and 50s, when having a book was such a wonderful privilege that I'd work hard to understand. I try to fix, then often will send the book back to step 1, knowing that there are people who have more knowledge and patience than I. So, either and neither way is correct.

I will reject anything which has a rank spelling of 94 to 96 percent minus capitalized words. Brian Jacques books have been mostly rejected from the list by me for now. The shame is I have no idea who the submitter is (a bookshare volunteer) who did such a poor submission. Somebody needs to fix ttheir scanning settings. Just awful scans.

Hello Elizabeth,
Keeping in mind the strange names this authors uses, if books are this terrible, why anyone would want to even attempt to fix them up is beyond me.

This goes back to my previous message, volunteers need to not be squeamish and take the easy way and release rather than reject.

From what it sounds like, I hope you rejected them.

Several books by the author Brian Jacques have recently been submitted to step 1. I am going to use these books as a example of the kind of thing which keeps the step 1 list clogged and generally slows down things. The books I downloaded had a rating of between 94 and 97 percent accuracy with capitalization turned off. That is a pretty poor rating and deserves a re-scan. The comment I want to make is about the history of these books. Each had been downloaded from step 1 at least three times by various volunteers, held for a couple of weeks each and then released back to step 1. Folks, books of this quality either need to be rejected immediately or need a volunteer willing to do lots and lots and lots of work to fix up these scans in which case the volunteer ought to hold on to the book and dilligently fix it up, not release such a poor quality book back to step 1. This is a personal opinion.
