Yeah, I hadn't thought of those books. I've read them all twice, except for
the most recent one, and I think I can see how their quality rating would be
artificially dragged down. I will be interested to see what the tools say
when Lissi gets done with validating my submission of The Book of Lost
Tales, Part One by J. R. R. Tolkien. There are a whole lot of names in that
as well, and often there are many permutations of the same name. It might
even be worse than The Jordan books. In fact, I would bet on it.

The idea of providing this percentage feedback at time of submission was passed onto the BookShare team a while back.
I would hesitate to base credit or anything else on what the BookShare tool says the quality is though.
I think Gerald said he had a complete Wheel of Time book that had been thoroughly read and spell checked, and the automatic rater dumped the rating at fair because of all the made up words. Now this book in reality took more work to make sure all of these things were correct, but he's going to get less credit?
And I don't think that we want to have to ask the admins to personally review these books to make certain the quality was rated correctly so the correct amount of credit is applied; they're busy enough as it is.
Automatic tools can only do so much after all, I've seen the adult content tool mark little kids books as adult, I'd really like to see the words it picked out to make that determination, smile.

I think what E. and I mean is this: When I submit my validated book to the
admin queue, the Bookshare tools run a ranked spell check or some other
process to identify it's final quality. In addition to doing this at the
validation step, we should do it at the submission step. The submitter then
receives immediate feedback as to its quality: fair, good or excellent, and
the person validating already has a rough idea of the shape the book is in.
Bookshare could then, eventually, bar fair quality books from being
submitted ... Or implement a scheme where an excellent book receives $3 for
submission, a good book $2, and a fair quality book $1. Increase the
validation credit to $1, and you have a very equitable scale, in my mind.

I don't think bookshare checks books that are submitted. They go instantly
onto the download shelf, and aren't checked by an administrator until
uploaded after valdation--and then, I think, Gustavo only checks the
copyright info. That's the impression I get, anyway, given the fact that
books in the collection have pages missing or garbled, etc. It would take
him too long to check through the book.
That's what we validators are for. So unless we reject a book, it's going to
be accepted by bookshare. I don't see how they can know what's poor quality.

- I basethis suspicion on the fact that bookshare still permits submits of poor quality books rather than raising the bar, thereby making less work for validators and improving the quality of bookshare's collection. Bookshare for now seems to want to keep the bar low and strive for quantity.
