[bksvol-discuss] books for/about parents/friends of Gays

-I can't remember on which list t the original request
was posted, so I'm posting these books on both.

My daughter's partner, who's associate director of
LYRIC (Lavender Youth Recreation and Information
Center in San Francisco) remembered a site, PFLAG.org
(Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and
found these books on it that deal with straight
parents of Gays. I hope they're helpful. They sound
interesting.

Cindy R. (the old one, not the newbie. I'd better
start adding my last intitial if the newbie is gong to
join our list :-)

Straight Parents Gay Children - Keeping Families
Together
by Robert Bernstein, Thunder's Mouth Press, 1995

Introduction by Robert MacNeil of the MacNeil/Lehrer
NewsHour. This is a personal account by a father who
came to terms with his daughter's homosexuality and
discovered that his life was thereby not diminished
but enriched. Robert Bernstein's inspiring story
relates his own and others; experiences with PFLAG, an
organization that helps keep families together. He
asks parents not just to love and accept their gay
children, but to speak out on their behalf. (In our
San Diego Library)

A Mother/Daughter Journey
by Betty DeGeneres (Ellen DeGeneres's mom) speaks out
in LOVE, ELLEN, and it's a fascinating -- and true --
story.

Betty DeGeneres's book is sure to hit bestseller lists
and stir up feelings in parents and their gay
children. The most important part of the book for
those of us who are "family" has got to be the time
that Ellen and her mother walked along a beach in
Mississippi and daughter turned to mother and said,
"Mom, I'm gay." Don't miss this interesting glimpse of
one of the great gay comedians and performers, through
her mother's eyes.

Beyond Acceptance
by Carolyn Welch Griffin, Arthur G. Wirth, Marian J.
Wirth, 1997

Parents of Lesbians and Gays talk about their
experiences. Beyond Acceptance in a ground-breaking
book that provides parents the comfort and knowledge
needed to accept their gay children and build stronger
relationships. Based on the experiences of other
parents, this book lets them know they're not alone
and help them through the emotional stages, providing
accurate, documented answers to the questions that
surface after the initial shock.
