Evan,

That's it, I think that the ' was the character that was causing difficulties in the past. Unix, Linux, and other Unix like operating systems don't care for spaces, they don't usually cause problems, but they have to use an escape character to display them, so "my Documents" would appear as "My\ Documents". I don't know what Macs do with them, since their OS is a significantly changed derivative of Linux, but G. Cindy could tell us. I don't run into file name issues on my uploads, as you could say I'm fixated in my MS-DOS stage, and I always move my working file to my root level and change its name to a short DOS style before upload, but I do remember a number of people having to deal with this in the past, which now that you've mentioned it, were probably associated with the apostrophe. As for that red flag of other operating systems catching up with Windows, I'm not even going to rise to that bait!

I routinely upload books with spaces in the filenames to Bookshare with no problems. No apostrophes, of course. I always replace the underscores with spaces in the filenames of the books I download from Bookshare. They just look more natural that way on my Pac Mate. I was not aware that other operating systems have problems with spaces in their filenames. I suppose I could get used to looking at, and putting in, underscores or dashes in my filenames; just like I got used to the cramped style of eight characters for filenames back in the DOS days; but I'm not going to bother unless I have to. Hopefully, someday, other operating systems will catch up to Windows with respect to being able to create more natural looking filenames. <grin>

Hi Dave,

No, this is *not* the issue. <smiling> Now I'm beginning to sound like E., God bless her. The issue, for the hundredth time, is that the control which comprises the edit field and the browse button, is only truly visible to users of Jaws. If you use WE, you see this control as a double edit box. It does not show up at all in System Access. I realize that a good eighty percent of you use Jaws so the issue doesn't apply to you, but it is most definitely one that needs to be addressed. It is not, as I said in my former post, a bookshare issue. It is an issue with all sites of this kind that have this control. It is a general, pervasive, important issue concerning web accessibility!

As for file-names, I couldn't agree more! In fact, one of the things in the proposed Wiki should be a note about file naming conventions. Dave is right. A file name should contain no spaces, and no additional punctuation like apostrophes or whatever. One should use either dashes or underscores between the words of the file-name. Computers running operating systems other than Windows have a hard time with file-names that have spaces in them. Why aggravate yourselves? Get used to writing file-names properly all over your computer, and you won't have any more trouble.
