The Mary Poppins series, by Travers, and Alice in Wonderland are in teh
collection and would be safe reading Personally I didn't care for Through the
Looking Glass a much as I did Alice in Wonderland

You might try some nonfiction that reads like fiction. Mao's Last Dancer is an
excellent book, and a movie is being made from it.
Marguerite Henry's horse stories should be fun and safe.
Seabiscuit should be o.k.
