Hi Jamie!

In Word 2000, after I load the book, I do the following before I start reading a book so that I eliminate the soft page breaks.

1. Press Alt to open the file menu.

2. Arrow down through the file menu until you find Page Setup and press enter, so you enter a dialog box.

3. at the top, there are tabs for margins, paper size, paper source, and layout.

4. Use your screen reader mouse keys or physical mouse to click on the tab called paper size.

5. Clicking will bring you to the tab control called paper size that will be announced, probably with any screen reader. It does with Window-Eyes, anyway. Tab once to the list of the different sizes of paper. You are probably at letter by default. Arrow down until you get to legal in the menu and hit enter to close the dialog box.

You should only get the page breaks, so it will say, for example while you arrow across a page break, "page break, page ten", and if you arrowed up once, you would be back at page 9.

If you are just reading in a laid back fashion with a read-to-end until you decide you need to stop to do something and you cross a page break, you will hear, "page break" announced without each number associated with the page break just passed.

That's all there is to it.

I hope I explained everything clearly.

I didn't know about this when I first started volunteering late October of last year either.

Hey, I didn't check anything or adjust or readjust anything. I'll have to re-read your message as I'm not familiar with that in word 2003. I'm intimidated by page numbers when it relates to bookshare as I don't want books rejected or sent back in the queue for something I'm not familiar with. Thanks anyway and have a blessed day.

Jamie, I'm thinking there is a possibility that this book had some soft page breaks. Did you, by chance, adjust the paper size in your page setup dialog? I'm assuming you were using Microsoft Word. Word puts in soft page breaks, which are really not there, but they are meant to show you where the page would end if you were to print it on the paper size that you have selected. If you go to file and page setup, select paper size, choose custom size, set that to 8.5 by 22, press okay, and tell it to ignore the margins set outside the printable area, these usually go away. Also, with Window-Eyes, and, I believe Jaws, you will hear the words page break, if you are actually at a page break. If you encounter a soft page break, you will hear something like page 3, and if you were to arrow back up you would hear page 2. You wouldn't hear the word break at all. I hope I didn't explain something you already knew, and that it will be helpful to you in the future.

Hi, maybe I used the wrong wording, but when I hear my jaws say page so and so and I hear it say a page number slightly smaller on a different page or in the middle of a page surrounded by blank lines and the pages without a blank line at the top, even though it's not as major as page break issues as you described, still there are issues that someone experienced in page issues and bookshare preferences related to them should fix them. I'm not clear about what the manual says and yes I've read the manual before anybody asks, yes, I did do my homework, LOL!!!! Thanks and have a blessed day.

Hey, Judy!

I only said that because of the way she said it had "discrepancies and inconsistencies" which implied to me it likely meant page break issues as well. I saw a book that had about 400 pages according to the TOC, but the collection book had 238, so there was no viable way to figure it out since it was not 2:1 as in unsplit double pages. Books like that usually need to be rescanned due to inappropriate or insufficient page breaks. If it is a simple thing of needing reference points to simply add numbers, I agree with releasing.

Like everyone else thought, though, I think being able to leave reasons for releasing would be VERY helpful!

Actually, I have to disagree with you on this one, Valerie. smile. I agree, given Jackie's explanation, with Jackie's choice to release the book instead of rejecting it. Many of the experienced proofreaders here are able to easily figure out page numbering problems without it taking very much time.

Having a comment added on why it was released would sure be helpful, though!

Dear Jamie;
It sounds like it needed to be rejected, not released, if the pagination is problematic. You could write to Carrie and see what she suggests, but they need to have a comment in the history in all likelihood.

Hi, all, since I'm not positive what bookshare wants in the way of page numbers and unfortunately, I saw discrepancies and inconsistencies, I have no choice to release it since I'm not skilled at solving page numbering puzzles no matter how minor. I hate to do this as the book did sound interesting and an easy read/proofread. If anybody wants to take another stab at it, it is You may all prophesy by Steve Thompson. I appreciate the effort of the submitter in making this book available and I pray I do not offend anybody by doing this. Thanks and have a blessed day.
