Hi Sue!

Interesting!

Kindle books have pages that can be stepped through in the Kindle app or reader.

In some PQ books, I have typed a page number into the search box, and when I do this, it does go to the page, even though there are no numbers or page breaks.

I don't think those publisher quality books that match their ISBNs with
Good Reads are intended to be just ebooks though. They are electronic
files and we Booksharians use them as ebooks, but they are intended to
be transmitted to the printing press and it is known how many pages
there will be. They are still electronic files, though, and will not
have page breaks. I think it is those page breaks that the Daisy books
count as pages.

I don't know if that's always the case, though. When I am on Goodreads
and I look up the ISBN of the Bookshare edition of whatever book I'm
reading, the number of pages in the book match up, more or less, with
the number of pages listed on Goodreads. Sometimes books have no pages
at all and come in one long file, but most of the time these days, PQ
books have pages with numbers. So the pages are definitely there, but
I think her question refers to the fact that the Bookshare site
doesn't recognize how many pages are in PQ books, even when they exist
in the book, and appear the same way as in books submitted by
volunteers. It seems as if small changes would need to occur on the
site, and that the publishers have nothing to worry about.

PQ books do not have page numbers because they do not come in pages.
They are electronic files. Each one is just one long electronic file
that when it is sent to the printer will be broken into pages as the
book is printed. The discussion of that problem has come up here before
and I think the conclusion is this. The publishers do not get a lot out
of donating their books in the first place. About the most they get out
of it is some public relations points. If too many restrictions were put
on them it is likely that they would just stop donating books. The lack
of page numbers is pretty minor even if it is an inconvenience, but it
is something that we need to put up with. As one long file, though, it
is similar to the book being printed on one long roll of paper without
it being cut into pages. When that roll is cut then you will have pages
and it is the printing press that determines where the cuts will be made.

Hi all,
I was wondering (and I'm sorry if someone already brought this up) if
anyone else wonders/gets kind of annoyed or knows why PQ books don't
have page numbers in the book summary page. I don't know if this is
just me but I like to know how many pages a book has for my own
keeping and I've noticed PQ books don't have this. For example, Hex
Hall has no page numbers in the text of it and it doesn't say in the
summary. I am just curious. I also wonder if anything can be done for
page numbers to appear in the summary page at least.

Jackie
