Hey Cindy,
    ARK files are the propprietary format used by OpenBook. It's similar to
KES, which is Kurzweil's proprietary form. You'll need OpenBook or Kurzweil
respectively to deal with the files.

    Stephen said a while back that Kurzweil had provided a command line
application to BookShare which could be used to batch convert KES files to
RTF when uploaded by the submitter, but BookShare hasn't chosen to employ
that technique yet.

    So no, it isn't possible at this time for someone to download an ARK
file, convert to RTF and then put it back on the step 1 page. (You could do
it by rejecting the ARK book and then submitting your RTF copy. This however
wouldn't be right as the original submitter wouldn't receive the
credit/recognition of their effort.)

    All files are returned as RTF excepting BRF, DAISY and sometimes TXT,
which of course can go back as either TXT or RTF during validation.
