Hi, Liz. Things are pretty calm for me these days, so I'm happy to help you out. As you know. the LBGT books interest me greatly. You can contact me off-list at: solsticesinger25@xxxxxxxxx Shannon We are wise, not because we are women, but because we seek wisdom. ----- Original Message ----- From: "liz halperin" <lizzersagain@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, February 17, 2008 11:38 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: another process observation Thanks Scott. I think part of the reason that the Step One Books list is shorter is that BS hired someone to specifically work on validating books that have sat there for over five weeks. I have been a die-hard scanner since Bookshare came on line. I had a "tag team validator" until not that long ago. We worked together very well and my books, almost flawless when I sent them up, processed through validation process very quickly and also through admin very quickly. Then she became unable to continue. I wasn't on this list anymore due to traffic volume, but asked someone to advertise for me for a regular validator. A few people volunteered, but it tended to be those already with full plates--you know how that goes: it's often the busiest who take on more. One was brand new, just joining BS even, so I asked her to wait. I note she's busy validating now though! (If you're reading this, you know who you are!) Anyway, it's been pretty hit and miss with getting validators. The one who has the current book isn't on the list and doesn't seem to want me to have contact. Claire O. looked up who it was and has made contact twice and given my email address and timeline for me sending the book back, but the validator hasn't contacted me. I had been holding the book in case anything needed checking and finally had to give it back. I'd love to have a reliable, not already overwhelmed regular validator. I read and edit every book I scan, so I catch the scannos and stuff already. With one exception that I learned how to reformat, they are dang near perfect. So I'm frustrated that a book with an unknown validator has been languishing out in validation land and it makes me less motivated to continue when it's not as easy to get validators any more. All that aside, when you totaled up the numbers you made some very good points. Thanks! A couple months back, there were upwards of 430-450 books on step one regularly. There are about 150 books being validated. This number isn't so high. Now, there may be some instances where validators hold onto books for far too long. This is indeed anti-productive. When you put the two numbers, approx 360+150, you get slightly over 500 books. This isn't a staggering number by any means. I'd say one way to facilitate the efficient validation of a book, if you're not finding that a submission is getting into the collection in a timely manner, would be to get involved closely with a validator or two. I've found this works very well for me, an exclusive scanner. I am in regular email communication with two validators who work consistently with my books, and those books are never under the validation microscope for more than a couple weeks, and that's an overestimate. If you are already exercising this methodology, then possibly you should seek a different validator, or inquire with the current one as to why they are taking so long. There can often be circumstances which require a slow and tedious effort with a scan. Communication is key, and when scanners and validators work together, everything improves.
