[bksvol-discuss] Re: about braille

Hi Paul and Guido,
As much of a braille fanatic as I am, I would not argue that no one can ever
comprehend audio material as well as they could comprehend braille.
Obviously if someone has difficulty with nerve damage or something else that
makes braille difficult or impossible to read then it would not be a
practical option for them. I would not say that that person was not reading
something because they were using audio and not braille. If I were teaching
and had a student in this situation I would work with them to make sure
they're listening skills were developed as highly as possible. In high
school I tutored a sighted student who had absolutely 0 reading
comprehension when reading print silently to herself,but when she read
something out loud it would come alive for her. Clearly audio would be her
preferred format. Forcing a student with tactile impairments to struggle
endlessly with braille would be as pointless as forcing a student with very
low vision to struggle with print using a CCTV. As for braille-reading and
employment, even as a braille-reader I've never understood the correlation;
not when most input at work would probably come from a computer anyway.
