Hi, Evan and Kim,
If I am understanding Kim's situation, there are not really two sets of numbers. I proofread in Word, and whenever a page break occurs, Word states a page number--really a page count. This count includes all pages identified with page breaks. For example, the book I am currently scanning has ten preliminary pages, several pages of praise for the book, a title page, a dedication, a Table of Contents, etc. After the preliminary pages, the book actually begins with Arabic page 1. Word will say page 11, but there is no page 11 actually written in the text, only the Arabic 1 is in the book. I'm not sure if that is what Kim is describing, but it sounds like the situation.

There shouldn't be two sets of page numbers in Bookshare books. NLS does it because their books are printed on paper, and the braille page numbers differ from those in the original text; and those braille page numbers aren't really necessary anyway. The only relevant page numbers are those from the original print book. Bookshare books are only supposed to have one set of page numbers, those in the original print book.

The big deal is that Bookshare is producing a lot of books for students. I can see some students having problems figuring out where they're supposed to be if they've got two sets of page numbers.

Hi, Tracy, when I was going to school there were print page numbers and
Braille page numbers and of course when it came to attending class the
instructor would mention what I thought of as the print page numbers. In
fiction one only had the Braille page numbers, but things have changed. I
got a collection of stories by Patricia McKillip and the book was numbered
like a text book (yeah, you guessed it, both print and Braille page
numbering). Now when I'm reading for pleasure seeing that line of dashes and a page numbered attached definitely interrupts reading flow (for lack of a better expression). I've also come across books in Bookshare that have two sets of numbers (Ngaio Marsh Five Complete Novels has both for example). I personally don't see what the big deal is, but I do want the page count to be accurate, but more important to me is the accuracy of the text. Regards,
Kim Friedman.

I don't see the purpose of having page numbers put in by Word, or any other program. If I'm reading a book, the only page numbers I care about are the
ones in the book. If I'm using the book in a class, or even a reading
group, I want to be able to refer to, say, the passage on page 210.
Ken Cross used to have fits about Bookshare page numbers, and rightly so.

Tracy

Hi, gang, I've sent Jack of Kinrowan back to bookshare in hopes of it
being approved. The file had two sets of page numbers, one based on
the actual book (me), and one based on MS Word which were there twice.
Ah, heck! This is confusing! Anyhow it all works out okay. If you
count the prefatory pages along with the rest of the book, the pages
add up to 480. I guess what I was being told was that I couldn't have
both. For example, if I was on print page 8 of the actual text, the
page field would say p.14 and 2 lines down there was p. 8 which is
what you would read (I think that's right.) Grr!
Anyhow, I hope that it gets into the collection by hook or by crook.
Regards, Kim a semi-non-confused proofreader.
