Hi Mayrie,
Sorry. I pushed the wrong button on the spell checker and turned your name into
the wrong thing.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: What To Sell On EBay And Where To Get It

Hi Jim,

Well, the page numbers that Word announces and the actual numbered pages
are very unlikely to match. This is due to the fact that preliminary pages
containing copyright info, the title page, and other preliminary material are
often not numbered, or numbered by Roman numerals while the actual text of the
book is where page numbering in arabic numerals starts. To account for this, I
would find the first page numbered with an arabic numeral, and count back page
by page from that to where the page would be numbered 1. At that point, count
your number of preliminary pages, those before the page you have numbered 1.
This will tell you the amount by which Word's numbering and the actual page
numbers differ. You can then insert page numbers after page 1 and thus varify
where sections in the table of contents are actually, and make sure that the
page numbers in the table of contents scanned correctly.

If you want the page numbers to match exactly, I suppose you could cut all
preliminary material, that which you have made sure comes before page 1 to
another file and save it. Then you will have a file in which Word's page
numbers and the page numbers in the book match. You can, from there, varify by
using the table of contents the page numbers on which sections or chapters
begin. After you have varified and numbered all pages that should have arabic
numbering, you can reappend the preliminary material to the top of your book's
file.

Sorry that wasn't the most eloquent answer. It isn't a quick process, but
with care it can be managed.

Good luck!

Mayrie

Hi Mayrie,
What if the book contains almost no page numbers and the pages Word reports
don’t match?

Thanks.

Hi,

I'd put the page numbers on the same line as the section headings to which
they apply. the only way to know whether they match is to check the page
numbers in the text itself. It is a bit of work, but the only way to make sure
that the table of contents is correctly formatted and contains accurate
information.

Hi,
What should I do if some of the page numbers for a table of contents are below
section titles in a column all by themselves. I don’t know if they match up or
not.

Thanks.
