Hi, Evan, I guess this is one more tool in the proofreading arsenal. I'll
try it. What I did was write Misha and ask him. I didn't do the rank
spelling thing (whatever that's supposed to be). It turns out that what I
did was supposed to be in the text. I would look for occurrences of a word,
and I concluded the author chose the spelling deliberately. Do you get an
intuition about such things? Regards, Kim.

One thing you can do when you find a word in a book and wonder whether it is
legit is Google it. Either do a general web search, or use the "define:"
feature and see if it turns up. (The "define:" feature isn't foolproof
though. I looked up a legitimate word today and found no definition. But I
did find references to it in the general search, though.) So doing a general
search may be your best approach, especially if you think it might be a word
that the author made up. If it turns up on web pages that refer to the book
you are reading, then you will know that it is scanned correctly. If it
isn't spelled correctly, you may get one of those "did you mean ...?" things
from Google, which may give you the correct spelling you need. No guarantees
on any of this, of course, but it's always worth a shot.

Hi, Gwen, thanks a lot. It looks like we belong to a mutual admiration
society, doesn't it? I have been reading your messages about the travails of
scanning and I concluded you are a very conscientious person who has pride
in her work. I don't know if you're a science fiction fan, though, given
your messages on what you like to read. I hope you can cut yourself some
slack, given that other folks on this list are happy to proofread your
scans, and must think they're very good. I'm still in the intimidated stage
(grin). I'm getting used to proofreading. This means I get to write
interminable posts bugging submitters like you, saying: "I just spotted the
word "kerfluffle on p. 119. Is that supposed to be there?" or "What is this
name supposed to be?" or "found the word Fragarah in the text. Also found
Fragana. Please verify which is supposed to be there" or "found
such-and-such and deleted it. Went a little farther and found this a regular
word that should be there. Went back and replaced word." I don't know what
other proofreaders have done with regard to the books you've scanned, but
this is the sort of thing I did on my last book, though to tell the truth, I
didn't write every day, just wrote when I had questions, and I didn't have
that many. Nice hearing from you. Regards, Kim.

Hi, gang, I'm really jazzed up because I got a note saying the book I just
finished working on is in the collection. What a rush! I'm also happy for
Misha because he scanned the book and gave it to me. I liked the book for it
was a very exciting read. I'm very happy because everybody else will be able
to read this neat book. If any of you decide to get it, I hope everything is
understandable. I can assure you I read every single solitary word. I'm not
boasting, but I'm so happy it's there to be read. Regards, a very happy Kim
Friedman who feels like dancing.
